Sandy Apple Crisp

Apple Crumble or Apple Crisp, a dessert made of apples with a brown sugar crumble topping baked into a round metal pan. This dessert is cooling atop a tea towel with a wooden spoon off to the side.
  • Filling:
  • 6 tart apples, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted cold butter, cubed
  • ice cream or whipped cream, garnish
  1. Preheat oven to 350º F and lightly grease a springform pan with butter, then wrap the outside and bottom of pan tightly with aluminum foil.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon and nutmeg, then add apples.
  3. Pour lemon juice over apples and toss everything together until apples are thoroughly coated and dry mixture is distributed evenly on them.
  4. Transfer apples to greased pan and set aside.
  5. In a separate, large bowl, whisk together flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  6. Add cubed butter and use two forks or a pastry cutter to cut butter in. Mixture should resemble coarse sand.
  7. Sprinkle topping over apples and place in oven.
  8. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and apples are molten and bubbly.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool 15 minutes before serving, top with ice cream or whipped cream.
